The Cell processor in the PlayStation 3, for instance, failed to break into the supercomputer market despite various attempts.Īs a result, Sony asked what the developers wanted in their new system. Additionally, none of these processors went beyond the PlayStation application as Sony had hoped, which not only contributed to the steep learning curve of programming them, but also made it harder for Sony to recoup the huge amounts of money they spent developing them in the first place. While devs learned to deal with the PS2 because the console was the clear market leader, the PS3 was not the leader for most of its generation and caused a lot of headaches that negatively affected many Multi-Platform games on the system. This can be advantageous if there are tight tolerances on the thread sizes or if allowances need to be made for finishing such as painting.Īlso, a single tool can be used in thread milling to make a wide range of hole sizes. So, the machine operator has the ability to adjust thread size using a strategy similar to using an end mill, rather than a drill bit to make a hole. A threaded hole is milled at a high RPM and the tool helixes into a previously-milled hole. The primary advantage of thread milling is the ability to control the fit. Thread Milling: Advantages and Disadvantages To complete these last areas as perfect threads, a secondary finishing tool is required and results in longer cycle times.Īs general rule of thumb, it is best to employ tapping when you need to make a lot of holes with few variations in size. In the case of blind tapping, the deepest threads in the hole are made with the part of the tool that is designed to plunge rather than thread. Also, rigid taps are used exclusively for interior threading of holes and cannot be used to mill threads onto the outside of a post or screw.įinally, since the initial portion of a rigid tap is designed to plunge into material rather than making perfect threads, these tools are best for tapping through holes rather than blind tapping, which is threading holes that end within the material. Once the hole is tapped, the size and position of the thread is final. Plus, having to switch tapping tools for all of the various size holes increases the cycle time.Īnother disadvantage is that tapping does not allow for adjusting thread fit. This can consume a large number of valuable, but limited positions in the tool magazine. Additionally, tapping can thread deeper holes in harder materials such as steel.Ī significant disadvantage of tapping is that a different size tap is required for each size hole that needs to be threaded. High-speed tapping centers set up with a rigid tap can thread holes in a fraction of the time it would take to thread mill the same holes. The greatest advantage of tapping is speed. This article explains the advantages and disadvantages of each so that you can make an educated decision about the strategy that will work best for your parts. Tapping, just what are the difference between them and when should each be used? Nature recordist that I met via email and 'phone - even the big name pros - have invariably been generous with their advice and helped me improve my technique. Since then I've recorded a lot of different birds with the aim of understanding their singing and of enjoying the sounds they make. That was the first recording I made that was valuable to me for sentimental reasons (who doesn't love the sound of Cranes?) and that I listened to and shared with friends because it was pretty rather than just something I could measure and draw pictures of. That fall I happened on a flock of Sandhill Cranes, threw myself down in the weeds, turned on the tape recorder, and got something like 15 minutes of audio as the flock got organized, took off (calling the while) and spiraled to altitude right over me. Those were fun time times and my simple equipment was plenty good to let me discover many things about common birds that I'd never even suspected before. I spent a zillion hours writing my own sound editing and sonogram programs. That spring and summer I carried the tape recorder whenever I went birding. And I could use a cheap recorder and free software to distinguish their songs. The sparrows in the park were singing upwards of 12 completley different songs! What I'd learned to ``identify'' as a Song Sparrow song was some collection of attributes common to most or their songs. ![]() Imagine my surprise when, having returned several times to visit and record the Song Sparrows at the park, I discovered that I'd been lazy in my listenting and hadn't paid enough attention through all the years I'd been birding. Even at that time there was free software available to edit audio files and even to visualize sounds by generating sonograms. It wasn't long before I discovered I could connect the tape recorder to a PC (headphone out to mic in) and use the computer's sound card to digitize recordings as I played them back on the tape recorder. I'd read about that too, but hadn't understood how very important singing and songs were to many birds until that day. Immediately 4 or 5 Song Sparrows turned up, started making chipping notes and looked very upset and agressive. Of course I'd read about such things and so tried playing the songs back to the bird. A Song Sparrow happened to sing from the top of a nearby shrub and I happened to turn on the recorder, capturing 2 renditions of his song. I'd stopped for a short walk at a park on my way home from work and happened to be carrying a small tape recorder that I sometimes used for dictation. ![]() ![]() I configured the default global shortcut (CTRL-ALT-K) for bringing KeePass available in any context on my laptop and workstation, and with CTRL-C and CTRL-V I could easily copy and paste secrets between apps. I was able to access my passwords securely from my mobile devices (Android and iOS) and everything was in sync. It was encrypted with something that sounds pretty secure, ChaCha20. I had nearly 1,000 identities or other secrets stored in a single database. Over the years I’d become pretty good at managing and using KeePass for my needs. KeePass is free, as in you can voluntarily make a donation to keep the development efforts going. I’d dabbled with KeePass several times and while it was slightly rough on the edges I somehow stuck to it. Many systems at the time did not support Facebook authentication or Azure AD single sign-on so I had individual accounts for many systems. I had amassed a formidable collection of passwords. I left Microsoft exactly 10 years ago, and we started our own company with my brother. As an IT Pro I’ve used everything from text files stored on Windows Desktop to encrypted Excel files to post-it notes to reusing the same password (“R3member1”, “R3m3mber2”.) to forgetting my password and resetting it.
